Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) for Neck-Related Conditions
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion surgery, also known as ACDF, is a neck surgery where the surgeon removes the damaged disc to relieve spinal cord or nerve root pressure. The surgical procedure is performed to alleviate an accident victim’s pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling. A laminectomy is a surgical procedure to decompress bones that are pressing on nerves and the spinal cord, while a discectomy is an operation to remove the damaged herniated disc in the spine in order to alleviate pressure.
Spinal injuries resulting from trauma and accidents, such as herniated discs, can compress nerve roots, and cause significant discomfort, pain and limited mobility. In the cervical area of your neck, symptoms can include pain, numbness, and weakness. This pain, numbness and weakness can radiate and travel down into your arms and legs.
In ACDF surgical procedures, the injured and damaged discs and bone spurs are removed and the pressure on the impacted nerve roots is relieved. In order to perform the ACDF surgery, the incision is made through the patient’s neck. A bone graft is implanted into your neck where the damaged discs and bones were removed. The bone graft fuses to the cervical vertebrae in your neck.
