What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc involves an injury to one of the rubbery cushions (disc) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that make up your spine. A spinal disc is similar to a jelly donut, with a soft center encased inside a hard exterior. Sometimes called a protruded disc or a ruptured disc, a herniated disc happens when some of the softer “jelly” is forced out from a tear through the tougher exterior. This injury can be caused from the trauma when someone is involved in an accident. A herniated disk can impinge and aggravate the nearby nerves which frequently results in stiffness, pain, and radiation of numbness or weakness into the arms and legs.

Herniated discs usually occur in your low back (lumbar spine), as well as your neck (cervical spine). Frequent signs and symptoms of a herniated disk are:

• Neck and back stiffness and pain
  Herniated discs can cause pain, stiffness, and result in difficulty turning your head, loss of range of motion and bending your back.
• Arm or leg pain
  When a herniated disc is in your lower back (lumbar spine), you can experience intense pain in the buttocks, thigh and calf. Pain may also travel all the way down to the foot. If the herniated disc is in your neck (cervical spine), the pain may radiate to your shoulder and arm. Pain can also shoot into your arm or leg and be aggravated when you cough, sneeze or try to bend the spine into certain positions.
• Numbness or tingling
  People who suffer herniated disc injuries may feel numbness or tingling in area for the body part extremities connected to the damaged nerves.
